Travel Tips Part 5: Packing with Purpose

This last one is for everyone, even bi-peds.

I had planned to leave this series of posts at four until I read an article from an in-flight magazine on the way to Melbourne this weekend.

The article made an impact on me so I'm going to shamelessly paraphrase it here:

Next time you fly somewhere, you'll likely leave a little spare room in your suitcase for souvenirs or anything else you might pick up along the way.

You can put that extra room to very good use thanks to an organization called PackForAPurpose.org.

If you're travelling to a developing community, consider packing school supplies for children such as crayons, pencils, pens and board games. Some areas may even benefit from basic over-the-counter medicines and analgesics.

PackForAPurpose.org has country-by-country lists of supplies needed in each region as well as lists of hotels, airlines, etc who participate in the program as drop-off locations. It's easy, convenient and makes a world of difference.

Before you fly again, check out PackForAPurpose.org!

  1. Hi Mike,

I have become a Google Analytic addict ever since we started our website Pack for a Purpose 4 months ago. This evening I saw a referal from your sight and decided to check it out. I was so delighted that first, you liked our concept and were willing to spread the word, and was very excited to see we were in an airling magazine! This is on our to do list, we had just not gotten to it yet. We were never contacted about that and I would love to know what magazine so we can encourage other airlines magazines to do the same! If you check out the News section on our website you can see we are trying to reach out because we feel sure the more people who learn about us and the more places we have on the website the better the chances for maxamizing the benefits. Our website is free and we hope to have every place possible doing a community project appropriate for the website, on the website. If you can email me and let me know which airline and magazine I would be thrilled.

Thanks for your support and kind words.

    With appreciation,

    Rebecca Rothney

  2. Hi Rebecca,

I just sent a reply through with a link to the article viewer online. The magazine was Voyeur magazine from Virgin Blue. Your article is on page 36. It's very well done!

Good luck to you and your whole organization!
    Mike
